This website is about my books and, occasionally, my reflections. Much of my writing is about Canadian airmen in the Second World War. Why? Because several of my own family served overseas, and some did not return. In later life I began to wonder about those men I never knew. Why did they go, what was their experience, what did they make of it? Some, as I discovered, had written letters, sent photos, and kept diaries. I grew up in the shadow of the war, but reading their words drew me into that world in ways I had not expected.
I needed context to understand what they were writing about. That led me on a voyage of research in archives, libraries, museums, airfields, and cemeteries in Canada and in England. I also encountered people with similar interests and stories to share. As I began to write my family’s stories, I grew interested in the larger context of the wartime experience of Jewish-Canadian airmen, of whom there were thousands.
This website will tell you what my books are about, how to get them, when and where I will be speaking about them, and how to contact me.
I also write blogs from time to time, mostly about my books and their themes. When the spirit moves me, I also write about things I have done, seen, and thought about — from my early years in the Northwest Territories to what I see around me now in the forests, fields, and waters of the Canadian Shield here in Lanark County, Ontario.
